About this place
Part of the pleasure at Umenohana is lifting yuba from the pot with your chopsticks. Diners have recalled the fragrance of the fried yuba and the fun of scooping and tasting it themselves. The kaiseki menus bring tofu and yuba to the table in a range of forms.
The hot pot is the main choice when selecting a course. The Ume no Hana Kaiseki is available with options such as hot tofu, yuba shabu-shabu or Japanese black beef shabu-shabu, and can be ordered for groups of 2 or more. It also includes signature tofu shumai, lotus-root manju, grilled wheat gluten with miso and fried yuba—well suited to a meal centred on tofu and yuba, shared around a pot.
For lunch, the weekday-only Ume Lunch includes small dishes, savoury egg custard, tofu salad, grilled wheat gluten with miso, fried yuba, yuba soup and dessert. A set with a choice of one type of shumai adds another option: tofu shumai, crab shumai or shrimp dumpling. Those who would also like hot tofu and seasonal rice can consider the Irodori Lunch.
There are also vegetarian menus featuring soybeans and vegetables. The reservation-only vegetarian kaiseki includes soy-milk shabu-shabu with yuba and vegetables, a yuba cutlet made with soy meat, and rice topped with fresh yuba in sauce. The vegetarian lunch is served at lunchtime only and also requires a reservation, so it is worth checking in advance to discuss your meal requirements.
Private rooms make the restaurant an option for group meals or occasions when guests would prefer to talk in a more private setting. From courses featuring a variety of tofu and yuba dishes to lunch sets, there are choices for different groups and ways of dining.
